In 1098 at the end of the 11th century, the monks of Cîteaux settled in the Saône valley where they founded the Abbey of Cîteaux. Eudes I Duke of Burgundy bestowed on the abbey a “clos” or parcel of vines in Meursault.
The monks began the construction of vaulted cellars that continued to expand over 700 years… They truly testify to a labour of love and patience dedicated to the art of making wine for the sake of enriching the abbey.
Today, these ancient Cistercian wines cellars have been beautifully restored to their original state with the addition of a few functional features.
We are not only pleased and proud to show them to our guests, but willing to organize wine tastings in this stunning setting, crowned with impressive vaulting and boasting a history of nearly 10 centuries.
Imagine yourself in the times of the highly dedicated and devout builder-winemaker monks… Admire the clever work of the Cistercians: the span of the flat vaults, the monolithic pillars, … Has time stood still? Perhaps long enough for the “angels’ share” !
The Spa Hotel Resort la Cueillette will open in June 2012. For further information or advanced reservations beginning now, kindly fill out the sheet here below.
